OUR HERITAGE
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) was shaped by institutions and values rising out of Pittsburgh’s past. A century and a half ago, it was a raw, new mill town, vibrant with energy and crowded with immigrants who were seeking opportunity or fleeing the conflicts in Europe. The brilliant, ruthless entrepreneurs who created the new steel, coal and glass mills were shrewd enough to see that the new, technology driven industries required not only a constant stream ofscientific and technological innovation but also highly trained scientists, engineers and managers. Therefore, they founded many institutions of higher education which emphasized research, including the University of Pittsburgh. At the same time, the workers formed ethnic and neighborhood organizations to fill some of the needs which had been provided by the communities they had left behind. They were often especially concerned with health care because of the hardships caused by the pollution and abysmal working conditions produced by the new industries. Many of Pittsburgh’s clinics and community hospitals were founded by such groups.
The manufacturing plants are gone now, but they left behind sturdy institutions and an ethic that valued education, innovation, cooperation and hard work. UPMC combines many of the educational and medical institutions that were founded and shaped during the industrial period. The Department of Family Medicine takes this process a step further, bringing a drive to help, to learn and to discover back to the communities in which it all began.
OUR MISSION
To develop innovative approaches to education, research, and community outreach, leading to exemplary family-centered health care across the life span.
OUR VISION
The Department of Family Medicine will be recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally as a model for excellence in education, research, and clinical care.
