He has published on the topics of social and contextual factors associated with youth violence and dating violence, application of creative and qualitative techniques and the implementation of principles of community-based participatory research. He completed his MPH and DrPH at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with post-doctoral training at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

| Biography |
Michael Yonas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. Concentrating on the health and safety needs of children and adolescents, his research employs a participatory and ecological perspective for understanding and promoting health of individuals and communities. Dr. Yonas is committed to exploring and preventing youth experiencing violence in the home, within relationships and in their communities. His work is influenced by years of community-based practice, service and research experience, focusing primarily upon the role of neighborhood and society-level factors impacting disparities in health. He has specialized training and experience in the application and teaching of principles of community- based participatory research (CBPR). Dr. Yonas is a Co-Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Community Engagement Core and co-instructs the course in Cultural Competence (MEDEDU 2240) in the School of Medicine.
SELECTED ONGOING RESEARCH
1. Exploring Community Unity: A Participatory and Creative Research Approach to Understanding Health and Safety with Youth and Communities.
Funding: Clinical and Translational Science Institute, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine / Highmark Found.
The purpose of this community-based participatory research (CBPR) pilot initiative is to learn about health, wellness and safety with youth and adults through an innovative application of the creative visual arts, utilizing painting, drawing and writing in order to focus and tailor preventive health promotion efforts.

2. Exploring the Experiences of Individuals Living in a Housing Crisis through Photovoice.
Funding: Community Human Services, Corp. and the United Way of Pittsburgh
The purpose of this community-based participatory research effort in partnership with Community Human Services, Corp. (http://www.chscorp.org) research is to explore the social and environmental factors associated with living in a housing crisis in order to inform intervention and prevention services.

3. Environmental Scan of Programs that Address Youth Violence in Selected
Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Neighborhoods.
Funding: United Way of Pittsburgh
The purpose of this study is to identify and assess the implementation of evidence-based practice within programs designed to address youth violence.

4. Greensboro Cancer Care and Racial Equity Study: A CBPR Approach.
Funding: National Cancer Institute (NIH) (1 R21 NCI CA119979-01)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the complexities of the system of healthcare which may explain deviations in breast cancer care among African American as compared with white patients.

5. Understanding and Overcoming Barriers to Standing Orders for Adult Immunizations in the Office Setting.
Funding: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Purpose of this mixed-methods study is to inform and implement a state-level survey designed to understand and inform standing orders for adult pneumococcal and influenza immunizations in Pennsylvania.

6. Promoting Cultural Competence in the Health Sciences.

The purpose of this initiative is to facilitating the integration of cultural competence training resources within the Schools of Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.
