Family Medicine Residency Program

Family Medicine Residency Program

Residencies in the Department of Family Medicine

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Family Medicine offers two residency programs:

  • Family Practice Residency

  • Combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency

Family Practice Residency Program

The Department of Family Medicine's Family Practice Residency program has an affiliation with three Family Practice Residencies in the UPMC system, which include:

  • UPMC McKeesport Family Medicine Residency
  • UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine Residency
  • UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency

The Family Practice residency program offers:

  • Combined osteopathic and allopathic training that is fully accredited by both the ACGME and AOA
  • Community outreach programs that serve their local communities and provide residents invaluable experience with the interrelationship of health and community
  • Opportunities to participate in a combined Global Health Track using the resources of all three core programs
  • Training opportunities with local and international underserved patients

Medical students from the University of Pittsburgh are taught by family doctors from the beginning of medical school while both regional osteopathic and allopathic students have clinical training at our residency sites.

Residents, fellows, and faculty in Family Medicine are published often in leading journals and textbooks, and are frequently selected to present at local, regional and national conferences.

Combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency

The Department also offers a combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Training Program with Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC, one of only 10 such programs on the country.

The Program trains physicians in medical and psychiatric specialties to:

  • Provide comprehensive medical and psychiatric services to a broad spectrum of patients in the community
  • Become leaders in academic family medicine and psychiatry

The program combines the resources of two residency training programs within the same medical system to produce broadly-based trainees who will be uniquely qualified to combine medical and psychiatric treatment to populations who require comprehensive health care services.

Presently, there are two training sites for the Family Medicine component of the combined residency:

  • UPMC McKeesport
  • UPMC St Margaret
