Quality Improvement by the 4 Pillars

The award-winning 4 Pillars™ Practice Transformation Program called (the 4 Pillars™) was developed to help clinicians improve quality and protect their patients from vaccine-preventable diseases, using a menu of evidence-based techniques that were organized around 4 domains. They are 1) convenience and easy access, 2) patient communication, 3) enhanced vaccination systems, and 4) motivation, typically via local immunization champions.

The 4 Pillars™ Practice Transformation Program for immunization was tested in before-and-after studies, followed by randomized cluster trials, and clinical use in UPMC; subsequently, the 4 Pillars™ was found to be cost-effective. In total, 14 articles have been published on the 4 Pillars™, leading to National Publication Award to PittVax from the National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit.
